Waste Management Practices of Selected Lounges in Ibadan Metropolis: Implications for Sustainable Urban Tourism

Abstract

1. Waste management practices are a critical component of sustainable tourism development. To better understand the implications of waste management procedures for sustainable tourism, the study aimed to investigate the waste management practices of some selected lounges in the city of Ibadan. The method used in this study was a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews and content analysis to explore waste management practices. In addition, the research offers a thorough evaluation of the approaches now in use, the difficulties encountered, and their effects on environmental sustainability. The findings reveal that most lounges rely primarily on basic waste disposal methods and lack formal recycling or compositing systems. Significant obstacles to efficient waste management techniques are expensive trash disposal, a lack of room for waste storage, and poor staff training. Furthermore, it highlights how crucial it is to promote sustainable tourism by modernizing waste management infrastructure and enhancing compliance with legal requirements. The study recommends improving staff training, investing in recycling infrastructures and strengthening waste management regulations. Lounges in the city of Ibadan can improve their waste management procedures by implementing these approaches, which would ultimately advance environmental sustainability and help achieve the more general objectives of sustainable urban tourism. Although these lounges contribute to fostering a cleaner urban environment, there are notable gaps in their approach, as seen by the ways their practices do not entirely fit with overall waste management sustainability goals. This study offers beneficial insights into how waste management is currently going in the hospitality industry and makes feasible suggestions for promoting sustainability in the city of Ibadan.
