Assessment Of The Role Of Private Universities In Increasing Access To Tertiary Education: A Case Study Of North Central Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examines the role of private universities in enhancing access to tertiary education in North Central Nigeria. It traces the historical development of higher education in Nigeria, highlighting the rapid proliferation of private institutions since the late 1990s in response to public-sector inadequacies, such as funding constraints and infrastructural deficits. The study assesses the extent to which private universities have contributed to expanding higher education opportunities, particularly in underserved regions, and analyzes persistent barriers, including socio-economic, geographical, and infrastructural challenges that hinder equitable access and quality. Drawing on secondary data sources, the research underscores that although private universities have significantly increased enrollment and diversified their offerings, regional disparities and systemic inequalities persist. The paper concludes with policy recommendations emphasizing targeted government intervention, infrastructural investments, and strengthened regulation to promote inclusive and equitable access to quality higher education across Nigeria.
